NaPloBoMo Day 1 – Barbie Dolls and Power Rangers

Daily Prompt taken from BlogHer: What was the one toy that a friend had that you wished you had when you were little?

I was not allowed to play with Dolls.
My Momma thought they were absurd
So everyday I’d try and steal
A look at my neighbor’s Barbie’s curls.

Try growing up with a Mom like mine
Who went through hell in the 70s
Marching out into the streets
Yelling, “Down with the dictatorship!”

It’s not easy and I eschewed
The normal trappings of a girly life
And since my brother was 5 years younger
My first doll was a Power Ranger

Power Rangers were all the rage
And Momma got Rangers Pink and Yellow
But when I grabbed sweet Kimberly
She gave it to my Auntie’s daughter

I grew up trading fairy tales
With Shakespeare and Archie’s Comic Books
Instead of a VTech with all the games
Mine had History, Language and BASIC too

So I turned out just like this
A smallish nerdy geeky girl
The one who can make a proper fist
And whoop for joy when others hurl

Thank you Momma – it’s been a hoot.
A childhood of unconventionality
You raised me up the best you could
And I am the happiest me, for it.

I wonder why our moms are not fond of Barbie dolls. Haha!
